The dealio is, IMHO, that it is just a game. You win some, you lose some. As a fellow alum of some considerable years tenure I can assure you that the ol' alma mater football team has never ever been dependable on the win lose record. So it depends on what you are looking for - thrills and excitement, definitely; consistency never. Unless of course you consider the one consistency in this - that the Cougs will never ever get to the BCS. With any other attitude one does oneself an injury every season in having fond hopes dashed.
Moreover, in order to have a consistently ranked FB team, the University would probably have to allow the coaches to do some things on recruiting and general admin which would not be consistent with university image. It doth not necessarily follow that personal uprightness always makes one a superior athlete. See biblical book of Job for details.
Specifically, the old saying says '... run and not be weary and walk and not faint ...'. I do not find "be ranked in the top 10 every year and make it to the BCS one or more years in a row".
We couldn't be more disappointed!
